Green Mountain and Fair Trade Coffee

I first became aware of fair trade coffee while visiting my local Starbucks a number of years ago.  If you are not familiar with the term or its significance, let me explain...

Certified_Fair_Trade.jpgAccording to www.transfairusa.org, fair trade certification empowers farmers and farm workers to lift themselves out of poverty by investing in their farms and communities, protecting the environment, and developing the business skills necessary to compete in the global marketplace.

Fair Trade is much more than a fair price! Fair Trade principles include fair price, fair labor conditions, direct trade, democratic and transparent organizations, community development and environmental sustainability.

Green Mountain is in the forefront supporting fair trade coffee.  As stated on their website, "Green Mountain Coffee Roasters has been a consistent leader in bringing equitable coffee to mainstream consumers. From our Stewardship ® program in the early 1990s, to our Fair Trade Certified™ K-Cups ®, we have found creative ways to connect our consumers with socially responsible coffees. Our efforts have helped educate consumers, build a healthy market for Fair Trade Certified™ coffees, and develop a means to address poverty and hunger in coffee-growing communities."

I find this socially-responsible path exceptional and the way Green Mountain has embraced shows great integrity.

Some of Green Mountain's newest K-Cup coffees are certified fair trade including two of my new favorites Fair Trade Organic Espresso Blend and PBS Blend.  The Espresso Blend as Green Mountain's experts describe is, "crafted for a superb performance in any espresso beverage, Fair Trade Organic Espresso Blend is sourced from a number of origins to display both balance and intensity. We look to Indonesia for syrupy body and depth, and the America's for chocolate notes, velvety richness, and just the right amount of brightness to punctuate lattes and cappuccinos. A blend of different roasts and origins that harmonizes beautifully straight or with milk."

The PBS Blend has a smooth and full flavor profile.  It's a medium roast coffee.  I enjoy it during breakfast because it's not overpowering like darker roast coffees but still provides a rich finish necessary for a morning pick-me-up.

Oh - it all means that both of these K-Cups are absolutely delicious!  I suggest buying some Fair Trade Organic Espresso Blend and/or PBS Blend to support the great benefits of certified fair trade coffee PLUS to enjoy two fantastic tasting coffees.
